I first heard of Monterey Bay Aviation at the Animal Friends Rescue Project (AFRP) Annual Holiday Fundraiser last December. Monterey Bay Aviation had been generous enough to donate a Scenic Flight as a silent auction item. I spotted the item early and bid aggressively on it, as I knew that it would make a wonderful gift for my husband, Taven. Taven loves to fly and has even started training to pilot a paraglider. I, on the other hand, am a nervous flier. I fly quite a bit out of necessity but, would never consider it recreationally.
When I finally won the item I was thrilled but quickly realized that I had bought myself a ride. The certificate was “for up to three passengers” and I knew Taven would want to share the experience with me. I tried to convince myself that this was a gift for him and I needed to put my own worries aside. Besides, I have a deep passion for the coast in general, and Monterey Bay in particular. I have driven, hiked, biked it, swam and kayaked Monterey but, to experience it from the air would an unparalleled opportunity!
When the time finally arrived for our scenic flight I feigned optimism and excitement. Taven still could sense my anxiety. We arrived at the flight center and were greeted warmly by the staff and introduced to our pilot, Michael Rucker. Taven let the on that I was just a wee nervous. Everyone was understanding and good-natured about this and I felt myself relax a little.
We were shown to the plane. The Cessna appeared sleek and new. The over- wing design provided a lot of visibility even out of the back seat (which I chose). Michael set us up with headgear that would allow us to speak to each other during the flight.
As we taxied onto the runway, I appreciated that our pilot took the time to explain what he was doing, what would happen along the way and made sure that we were comfortable.
Take off! The assent was smooth and light. As Michael said, “these planes can't help but fly.” It certainly felt that way as we glided south towards Big Sur , our chosen destination. The pilot was calm, professional and clearly had a love for flight. My trepidations continued to fade as I was caught up in the incredible sights below us and the jaw-dropping beauty of this place we call home. As Taven snapped photos, I scoured the ocean for whales that might be early on their annual migration. We identified the many coastal areas that we've known so well from the ground but took on richer dimension from the air: Point Lobos, the Big Sur, Point Sur Lighthouse, Post Ranch, Bixby Bridge , the 18 th hole at Pebble Beach , Cannery Row, Fisherman's Wharf and Harbor and Laguna Seca. We returned to the airport and Michael gently put the plane down. Nothing to it.
I would certainly recommend the scenic fight to anyone who has a love for the area – even if you don't exactly love flying. Even for me, the entire experience was exhilarating and mind opening. I am still a nervous flier but I would not let it stop me from going again – especially given the opportunity to see the whale migration. I may have the chance since Monterey Bay Aviation has generously donated a Scenic Tour to AFRP silent auction fundraiser again this year. Let the bidding begin!
